While this video is very telling of black people’s dependence on fast, unhealthy, food, I think it an insult for this post to be labeled “Don’t be Black.” For a website called BlackPower.com, I would hope your staff would be contentious about promoting positive ideas about what being black means. By labeling people’s reactions in this video as “black,” you’re selling hurtful stereotypes, and further spreading negative ideas about what blackness is. You ignore that this news report has only targeted restaurants in black neighborhoods and only put black faces in the report. Situations such as this has taken place with Starbuck’s, McDonald’s and other franchises but were are those news reports. At the end of the clip the two white women on the set are laughing. I am sure it is not Popeye’s they are laughing at.

As a black ran website it is unfortunate that you call out black people as being black when their actions has nothing to do with race. If anything, we should reach out to these types of people and try to educationally enlighten them. This video surely focuses on black people with poor eating habits however, there is lots of evidence to support that other races have the same of even worse habits than we do. If anything on Popeye’s behalf it was a poor job in forecasting enough food to support the promotions and a great job for an ignorant reporting staff in continuing to present black people as the “i would die without chicken lifestyle”…lol..

I am a black woman and I love my people but Im not gonna pretend like they don’t embarrass the hell out of me once in a while on the evening news. Thats real talk. So why can’t we have fun with it once in a while?

Perhaps you misunderstood. Yes, it’s sad that folks act like this but it’s an even greater travesty to label it as Being Black esp. by a pro black website. I don’t think calling embarrassing’ (per your post) actions “black” is having fun at all. That is like saying its okay to say black=embarrassment. Maybe you should get more serious rather than telling folk to lighten up.

my answer to that is: who cares?
i’m black and i dont think black = embarrassment. do we show our asses sometimes? sure. am i also supposed to condone the fight at the MLK Day Parade, because they’re black? you show your ass, you get called out, i dont care what color you are.
im black, i know this doesnt represent all of us, and to those in the community its funny as hell, ridiculous and a very familiar slice of black life.

wow, good arguments here. i personally thought it was funny. some of my best white friends eat popeye’s chicken. some of them even suck the bone and eat the gristle, but they’re not my best friends, just good friends. its okay to love fried chicken black people, if it’s seasoned correctly like only big mama, popeye’s, and roy rogers (what happened to them?) know how to do. i feel their pain. i would have been more pissed if they ran out of those damn good biscuits. damn im hungry.

Obviously….a slow news day. Good luck finding a news crew around when something positive is happening in the community or a young black teen is recognized for academic achievement. The sad thing…bet that news crew smirked and laughed all the way back to the station. I can’t remember the last time I saw that many soundbites in a piece. We got a full course meal…even though Popeye’s kicked the bucket.

Wow my first reaction was it must have been a slow days in the news. Secondly it struck me the people interviewed were most upset about other things other then those particular Popeyes being out of chicken. Several cited other things that had been happening with these franchises previously, & the economy.
So I would say give them a break for a moment. I love in an area where it is 1% black & believe you me, it is not just black folks seemingly acting a fool and emotions over the top.

no seriously, i got this from the minute i saw the title of the post. how many times, people, have we watched the news and prayed that they wouldn’t find the most ignorant person to interview? i know i have. and having the ability to laugh at that side of us has kept us sane from the middle passage onward.
this does not excuse, and should serve to remind us that the media is full of folks who derive great enjoyment from these types of endeavors. slow news day, it was not. it was a concerted effort to show the caricatures that keep white folks amused. but, alas, if you can’t laugh while being perturbed, what are you to do? murder your wife and kids, then yourself? sorry, that’s a white folks thang.

What’s messing me up is the fact that my own people are pitching a fitt about some damn chicken. When I last checked, don’t we know season and cook chicken and make side dishes. Why in the HELL are these folks complaining about a restaurant running out of chicken. Are you that lazy that you can’t cook your own meals. They invented meat packing plants for a reason. The created a building called a grocery store that refrigerates that meat. Take your lazy ass to the store, buy and COOk your own damn chicken!!!!! I swear Lazy People make me sick!!!!
