The team of McCain and Palin has reached new Orwellian heights with attempts at justifying the Republican talking point that they are more experienced and better qualified than Obama and Biden to be elected to the office of president and vice-president of the USA. It could have been laughed off as a matter of twisted opinion or huge egos, but this week the McCain/Palin campaign spun-out into the realm of lies, lies and more lies with ugly and dangerous racial overtones.
McCain reminds me of the moment the curtain is pulled back to reveal that in Oz there is no wizard, just a befuddled guy with limited mental capacity and no special skill.
This presidential campaign has been stunningly amusing at times but heart stopping scary most of the time. McCain has twisted and turned so many times that he must be breathless from the exertion.
The polls just have to be wrong. I cannot believe that anyone is still seriously considering casting his or her vote for McCain/Palin. Do their supporters understand that they are actually voting for Palin as president? Have they considered the possibility that McCain, a 72-year-old man with recurring melanomas, could die in office?
Listening to a speech by Palin sets my teeth on edge. She speaks in gibberish and her supporters listen in jabberwocky. They don’t know what she is saying but they like the rhythm of it. The thing is that Jabberwocky has a rhythm and it sounds like something important is being said, however, upon closer listening while some of the words do have real meaning and some are portmanteaux, a great deal of it is nonsensical:
“Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves
And the mome raths outgrabes.
– Lewis Carroll from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
The gobbledygook words flowing from Sarah Palin’s mouth are dire warnings to all, but especially women. If she is elected, America will take a serious step back in time when women were just window dressing for their husbands. The rights that women fought for and won will be lost under a McCain/Palin administration. The most serious will be the full out conservative assault on Roe v Wade.
Ms. Palin believes that abstinence is the best method for preventing unwanted pregnancies. Her record on women’s rights in Alaska is dismal and psychotic. Alaska has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the US and the highest high school drop out rate in the industrialized world.
Forty five percent of the births in Alaska are unplanned (31% is the National average) Here’s the racial breakdown: White 70%; American Indian/Alaska Native 15.4%; Asian 4.6% Black 3.7% (Source: US Census Bureau, July 25,2008)
While she was the Mayor of Wasilla she insisted that rape victims pay for their own evidence kits for use during trial. She is pro-life and her position is no choice in abortion, not even for rape and incest. Her campaigns state that she would cut family planning availability, birth control availability and she would drastically reduce funding and go to abstinence-only education and she opposes the use of public funding for abortions. According to an October 2006 Anchorage Daily News profile, Palin opposes stem cell research, physician-assisted suicide, and state health benefits for same-sex partners
Yes, yes, I know John McCain is the presidential candidate; Palin is the vice presidential candidate. McCain’s record on women’s right is as miserable as Palin’s. He is opposed to pay equity legislation for women, paid family leave, paid sick leave, funding of breast cancer research and legislation that would protect women who are victims of violence.
McCain repeats a promise to his supporters on the campaign trail that if he and Palin are elected she will oversee, government reform, programs for families with children/special needs and energy policy reform.
On a personal note the woman just scares me.
Palin has the jimmy-eye, the crazy eye. Her eyes are too bright and she is unnaturally energetic for a working woman with 5 kids, one of them a 4 or 5 month old baby with Down’s Syndrome. She is campaigning hard: jumping on planes, state to state hopping, giving 3 or 4 speeches a day and who knows what all else and she can’t sit down or shut up. Something is wrong here. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I think I am closing in and I have narrowed it down to a few choices. Could it be the lure of power? Is she the personification of the twin sins of insatiable avarice and greed?
Are you properly scared, too?
According to the ACLU only two states, Maine and Vermont, allow prisoners, parolees and probationers to vote. Thirteen states allow parolees and probationers to vote, eight states reinstate probationer voting rights, and 20 states restore voting rights to people who have completed their sentences, although each state has different processes, exceptions and limits on eligibility requirements. (Source: New York Times, Sept. 14, 2008; Solomon Moore)
There will never be a more important presidential election than this one. If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem – for sure.
