The Coaching Hot Seat

By Michael Langston Moore

Off With Their Heads

With both Scott Linehan and Lane Kiffin fired from their head coaching jobs at both St. Louis and Oakland, respectively, it’s time to examine who might be next on the chopping block.  While it’s easy to suggest Marvin Lewis of the woeful Bengals or Rod Marinelli of the inept Lions…ask yourself this:  Oh, Romeo, Romeo…Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?

Yes, Romeo Crennel of the 3-4 Cleveland Browns should be the next head coach at the back of the unemployment line. Really though, is there a more disappointing team in the league than Cleveland?  Finishing 10-6 last year, the Browns were aggressive this past off-season.  Signing both Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers to shore up their defensive line, Cleveland also inked quarterback Derek Anderson to a long-term deal and signed free agent wide receiver Donte Stallworth, as well.

Granted, this team has been hit hard by the injury bug.  But Crennel has shown himself to be a poor, stubborn gameday coach.  He wastes timeouts.  He doesn’t adjust to his opponents’ gameplan.  And worst of all, he has refused to pull struggling Derek Anderson from the game in favor of Brady Quinn.

Isn’t that the reason you draft quarterbacks in the first round—to play them?  Especially if your starting QB can’t get the job done?

The Browns consistently look unprepared for every game.  I know some may refer to the aberration that was the Monday Night Football game against the Giants.  No doubt the team came to play that night.

For one game.

In general, there is no urgency to this team, and players are getting penalized for silly infractions.  It’s time for Cleveland to cut their losses.  Sure, Romeo is a great guy, but a great head coach he is not.

The Browns needs to hire a younger coach.  Someone who can light a fire under this team, and one who can realistically coach them for the next decade.  As of now, Crennel is holding this team back.  Loaded with enough talent to be competitive, the Browns just need quality coaching to put it all together.
